Harvey's private eye fiction is filled with Chicago's city neighborhoods and noir humor. But the irony fades from Stephen Hoye's voice as Detective Michael Kelly's cold case investigation into a serial rapist leads to the death of his best friend. Hoye's voice exhibits an impressive range. When Kelly says, "I tried to keep the grin out of my voice," you can hear the subdued humor in Hoye's voice. As Kelly describes a cop on archive duty as a sick caretaker of crime, his solitary career resonates in Hoye's speech. Kelly teams up with a beautiful television newscaster to solve the new and old cases, and runs into a murderer on death row, lots of cops, and mobsters, all handled with distinct though somewhat predictable accents.
