JANE EYRE

Most listeners know the story of Jane Eyre, the shy, penniless, abused orphan who takes on a governess role for the child of Mr. Rochester. But even Brontë's biggest fans will find something new and compelling in this fine reading by Maureen O'Brien. She captures the role of Jane fully, both the timid girl and the mature woman capable of loving and being loved by a powerful man. O'Brien does equally well with that man, conveying Mr. Rochester's shifting moods and anguish at loving Jane when he knows he shouldn't. Minor characters abound, and O'Brien is master of them all, making listeners aware of their different status and education, their admirable and not-so-admirable attitudes and behaviors.
