This is truly the introduction to the earth's three major ecosystems (arctic, tropical, temperate) that its subtitle indicates. It offers an interesting discussion of why and how our planet supports life and reviews the types of animals and plants native to each ecosystem. Professor Kricher, a Wheaton College biologist and amateur ornithologist, is an agreeable guide. His even inflection is occasionally too lulling, but his clear pacing and warm tone keep the listener involved. One does wish that the lectures offered something significantly more than a reading of the enclosed course guide, but as an introduction this pleasant program serves its purpose.
