Phelps offers a thorough look into the 1994 homicide in Connecticut of "Buzz" Clinton, and narrator J. Charles manages the impressive task of holding interest even as the most tedious details unfold. As is sometimes the case with true-crime audiobooks, there are times when an abridgment would have served. Forward momentum is frequently impeded by countless interviews and inconclusive speculations. Charles gets to offer solid characterizations in the dialogue exchanges and interview sequences, but it is his high level of enthusiasm rather than the changing personalities that will engage listeners. Family feuds, custody battles, criminal cabals, ruined reputations, and false accusations typify this convoluted mystery. Phelps and Charles help separate fact from assumption, truth from hearsay.
