Dick Hill manages to remain enthusiastically engaged without becoming salacious as he reveals who slept with whom, who took too many drugs, and who was a vindictive bully in the Hollywood scene of the late '60s and '70s. Peter Biskind turns over some smut-encrusted rocks to get the dirt on directors Hal Ashby, Robert Altman, Warren Beatty, Roman Polanski, and others. His approach is pure tabloid, revealing the secrets, insecurities, and excesses of the men and women who made some of the great ground-breaking films of the period, such as CHINATOWN, HAROLD AND MAUDE, THE GODFATHER.
