THE LOWDOWN: BUSINESS ETIQUETTE—CHINA

by | Read by Trevor White, Lorelei King

Contemporary Culture • 50 min. • Audio Program • © 2008

In less than an hour, this program covers the broad range of customs a Westerner needs to successfully carry out business in China. In an easygoing dialogue, Trevor White converses with Lorelei King, who sets him up with questions, such as, "Should I use chopsticks? Bring gifts?" (Yes to both). Focusing largely on encounters with Chinese executives, the chatty dialogue ably covers the concepts of saving face and networking, and includes useful etiquette tips for business and social situations. Both narrators are likable enough, and the advice rings true. However, White is by no means fluent in Chinese. A narrator more fluent in Chinese would have been a better choice, especially for schooling listeners on the pronunciation of common expressions.
