Thrilling Listens for the Spooky Season

Fall is here—the cooler air, brilliant foliage, and harvest bounty all add to the thrills and chills of the Halloween season. For mystery fans, it’s also the perfect time to indulge in spine-tingling listens. Whether you prefer witches, ghosts, vampires, or ordinary people doing terrible things, the audiobook choices are rich and rewarding. Here’s a sampling of Earphones Award winners to set the mood:

A RESISTANCE OF WITCHESFans of witches and historical fantasy will be entranced by A RESISTANCE OF WITCHES by Morgan Ryan, performed by Grace Gray. Three characters—a recent graduate of the Royal Academy of Witches, a Jewish resistance fighter in France, and a Haitian American art restorer—join forces to battle a coven of Nazi witches during WWII. Gray’s deft narration of voices across genders and cultures makes for an immersive, heart-pounding listen.

THE BUFFALO HUNTER HUNTERFor a historical horror novel, listeners will be be swept away by Stephen Graham Jones’s THE BUFFALO HUNTER HUNTER, narrated by Shane Ghostkeeper, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teale. The tale revolves around the discovery of a diary from 1912 written by a Lutheran Pastor that reveals a massacre on the Blackfeet reservation. The three narrators expertly performing their characters, combined with production enhancements, make for a dark, engaging listening experience.

THE GHOSTS OF GWENDOLYN MONTGOMERY

Listeners who are drawn to ghosts and the supernatural will be captivated by THE GHOSTS OF GWENDOLYN MONTGOMERY by Clarence A. Haynes. Brittany Bradford voices high-powered publicist Gwendolyn, who must confront demons from her past, while André Santana brings to life her cousin Fonsi, a queer psychic. As Gwendolyn and Fonsi try to protect the living from the dead, both narrators amplify the story’s eerie atmosphere.

KILL YOUR DARLING

And for listeners who like their horror grounded in reality, KILL YOUR DARLING by Clay McLeod Chapman, performed by Sean Patrick Hopkins, delivers. When grieving father Glen Partridge begins writing about his 15-year-old son’s decades-old unsolved murder, he stirs up chilling consequences. Hopkins heightens the suspense with a well-matched, tension-filled narration.
