Kate Simon is the author of NEW YORK PLACES AND PLEASURES, a guidebook first published in 1959, which many consider the best such book about New York ever written. It's no surprise, then, that BRONX PRIMITIVE, a guidebook to one child's immigrant experience in New York, should also be a gem of its kind. Simon, who was born in Warsaw in 1912, arrived in the Bronx with her family when she was 6 years old. She has a gift for recollecting the colorful and fragrant details that made up her streets and the character, and characters, of her childhood world.
