This might be a Gothic romance. Here are craggy Irish cliffs; clashing waves; handsome, unsuitable men. Or an Irish myth. Certainly, there are mythic complications in Clodagh Sheehy's experiences. Her father died before she was born. Her twin sister died when she was 5. Her mother, Agatha, is as cold as the sea spirit she is rumored to be. Regina McBride creates a nineteen-year odyssey for these two women with the certain touch of a poet. What could be ordinary becomes rarified. Terry Donnelly's performance enhances the magic in Clodagh's story. Her voice rings true and clear; her accents are completely winning. A startling discovery near the end momentarily turns drama to melodrama; however, McBride's controlled writing and Donnelly's character interpretation elevate the novel firmly beyond that. S.J.H.
