The serial's hero, Mathew Hervey, suffers and savors life in the post-Napoleonic (1817) British cavalry as he finds himself at action with both the enemy and his heartthrob, Lady Henrietta. The story transitions well from previous episodes (this is number three), and the narrator Erick Graham once again calls upon his multilingual repertoire of impersonations and accents for the story's personalities. The historical part of the novel uses many turns of phrase of its time to achieve verisimilitude, but the narrator's comfort with antiquity makes it seem as if he were speaking the language of today.
