This enchanting story of magical realism is beautifully rendered by narrator Rebecca Greene. When 9-year-old Brooke Morts's beloved dad is redeployed to Iraq, she's heartbroken. Greene warmly portrays the close relationship between Brooke, her mother, and her brother--with listeners sharing the family's grief when Dad is killed. Most engaging is when Brooke finds a magic necklace left behind by her father. After she wears it and turns into a cardinal, she has adventures with other birds, pigeons, mice, and rats and learns that love and family are forever. Greene perfectly conveys each creature's voice and personality. Most endearing is Timmy, a mouse who has also lost a family member. This story offers much to kids, especially those struggling with a personal loss. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2015]
