This production features two of Lewis's best-known nonfiction works. MERE CHRISTIANITY, adapted from a series of radio lectures he gave in the 1940s, presents the basic doctrines of orthodox Christianity. SURPRISED BY JOY is the recalling of his spiritual journey from his birth through the time he became a Christian while at Oxford. One wishes that more people in our times wrote with such clarity, erudition, and eloquence. This recording, originally a Blackstone production, is read with seeming effortlessness by Geoffrey Howard. Whatever the late Lewis really sounded like, he should have sounded like Howard, whose reading has an air of authority and confidence, as well as a resonant clarity that are a special treat to the listener.
