Robin Miles's expert narration truly brings out the best in Jamaica Kincaid's tender account of a girl's childhood in Antigua. Miles's performance savors the tastes and smells of the novel's Caribbean setting--a great strength of Kincaid's writing--and re-creates the excitement, innocence, and sorrows of childhood with grace and skill. In rare moments Miles's pacing seems just a fraction too slow. But these moments mean nothing in comparison to her sensitive portrayal of Kincaid's vibrant protagonist, Annie John. Overall, Miles shapes this production into a vibrant and compelling listening experience. Z.S. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2019]
