Holter Graham's narration matches the author's tense tone in this expansive audiobook. In 1918, in The Big Easy, King Zeno is a jazz trumpet player caught who also works on a local construction project. (Only one of the gigs pays well.) An ax murderer is claiming victims at the same time that a flu epidemic grips the city. Zeno's world ultimately crosses paths with the murder plot, which adds a police procedural to the historical aspects of this novel. Often, the action can be as dizzying as a jazz performance. Happily, Graham handles the large cast of characters and multiple storylines with ease, ratcheting up the tension in the right places and keeping listeners engaged.
