Clara Curfman, her family, and amazingly, their home, survive the great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. During the confusion in the hours immediately afterwards, someone leaves a baby on their doorstep. Quickly Clara and her family are drawn into a case of kidnapping. This engaging story is filled with vivid descriptions of the aftermath of the disaster; the excitement, action, and suspense of the kidnapping; as well as some gothic elements in the plot towards the end. Suzanne Toren gives a splendid performance of this American Girl History Mystery. Her energetic delivery has a pleasing tone and good vocal characterizations. M.T.F.
