Elizabeth Thatcher never imagined that life could be so difficult on the Canadian frontier until she was there and found it a far cry from her East Coast roots. Narrator Nancy Peterson's skilled portrayal of the characters in Oke's historical romance creates the sense of listening to a play instead of a straightforward reading. Vocal differentiation is realistic and not overdone. Peterson's soothing tone highlights the gentleness of the characters in the story. Emotions are palpable--from the concern of Ms. Thatcher for her students to the rich tones of Wynn, a Canadian Mountie who is her love interest. Listeners will envision the characters and settings as old friends and familiar places by the time the audiobook ends. C.L.S. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2018]
