Intensive care patients, their loved ones, and even their doctors rarely consider life after the ICU. In this medical nonfiction narrated by Susannah Jones, with an introduction and epilogue read by the author, a critical care physician examines life after a stay in intensive care. One man lives with a battery-powered pump that keeps his blood moving because his heart is not strong enough. A woman is kept alive by a machine that re-oxygenates her blood outside of her body. Lamas is interested in human stories but also in the technological advances that make them possible. Her narration is less smooth than Jones's but projects her engagement with her topic.
