This spin-off from the Hellequin Chronicles and the start of the new Avalon Chronicles features Layla as the feisty protagonist. Narrator Elizabeth Knowelden introduces Layla as a self-reliant woman who can protect herself in all sorts of situations but still has a vulnerable side. Ogres, demons, and werewolves don't faze Knowelden, just to mention a few of the nonhumans who populate the adventure. Much of the plot moves at a fast pace. Knowelden is adept at building suspense and then releasing a bit of the tension, only to have even more intense challenges present themselves, which she delivers accordingly.
