A DOG SO SMALL

Ben believes his grandfather's promise of a dog for his birthday despite the fact that he has no place to keep one. His disappointment at receiving a picture of a dog instead will feel very real to children who've longed in vain for a pet. Jenny Agutter adroitly narrates the twists and turns of this story, expertly capturing Ben's longing and discouragement, as well as a sense of mystery as he imagines his way to owning a pet. Agutter's perfect pacing and fully developed characters will speak to children who must turn from a world of fantasy and the impossible to embrace what is real and possible. J.C.G.
