Narrator Soneela Nankani provides just the right level of dramatic tension as the voice of Butterworth's young protagonist, Tash. In doing so, she propels this audiobook into a uniquely immersive experience. Living in Tibet and India, young Tash and her family are Buddhists who must keep in line with the occupying Chinese. Two words are forbidden: "Dalai Lama." Tash and her friend, Sam, must escape after a crackdown in her neighborhood that results in her parents being taken prisoner. Nankani's welcoming voice evokes the youth of these characters as they face real-world challenges. Middle grade listeners and high schoolers will be captivated.
