In this sassy first novel, a 44-year-old Jewish bachelor realizes that he’d better get moving if he wants to have a kid. He enlists a female Italian co-worker at the Chicago Sun-Times, a youngish single mom, as confidante. Thus begins a comedy, reminiscent of When Harry Met Sally told from his and her points of view. David Colacci and Susan Ericksen not only take turns narrating in character, but play the dialogue scenes together. They have a nice rapport and sense of character. However, director Michael Page should have gotten them to relax a bit more. Nonetheless, the banter between them enlivens even the less inspired passages.
