The unexpected death of their mother leaves landscape designer Tanner Harlow in charge of his 11-year-old half sister, Maddie. Narrator Rebecca Gibel helps the listener feel Tanner's struggle as he copes with this challenge. Tanner looks to Francie Tate, a childhood friend who is now an elementary school teacher, to help him watch Maddie as he develops his new business. The plan is for Maddie to go live with her aunt in Hawaii at the end of the summer. Gibel gives Maddie a youthful voice fitting her character. The listener empathizes with the anguish Tanner feels at wanting to do what is right for Maddie, but Maddie longs to stay with her brother. Gibel has the listener rooting for a happy ending for them both. S.B. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2018]
