Nursery assistant Louisa Cannon tries to help a fellow household domestic escape Forty Thieves, a vicious all-women's gang, and go straight. But things go horribly wrong when a party guest winds up dead and Louisa's friend gets charged with murder. Atkins effectively conveys the ambiance of the Roaring Twenties, along with the pushback from many born in the Victorian era. She especially excels at interweaving the various threads of the plot that don't intersect until late in the book.
