REDEMPTION

by | Read by Charles Keating

Fiction • 6 hrs. • Abridged • © 1995

Set in New Zealand and Ireland from the late 1880s through WWI, Uris's novel tells of three families and their struggle for independence for Ireland. We learn of British rule in Ireland and how the Irish rebelled in a variety of forms. Charles Keating performs with aplomb, using a straightforward tone and crisp accent for the narration, as well as subtle shifts to broad New Zealand accents and soft Irish accents for the dialogue. The abridgment makes the story seem disjointed, but Keating maintains a steady narrative throughout, trying to tie the events together. This in-depth look at the Irish struggle for independence captures the hearts of its characters and will enchant listeners. M.B.K.
