Narrator Pearl Hewitt deftly introduces Tillyhinge, an English village, and all that goes on there during the summer solstice. "Bewitched by Chocolate," a store owned by the Widow Mags, sells chocolates that seem magical and addictive, which makes the suspicious townsfolk avoid her wares. Tension escalates when a rare recipe is stolen and a bully is murdered, with suspicion falling on one of her victims. It's amusing when Widow Mags's granddaughter misjudges a love potion, which turns her intended boyfriend into a donkey. Hewitt is at her best creating imaginative verbal sound effects for the donkey; for Ferdinand, a lovesick bull; and for spirited Nibs, the shop's demanding cat. As listeners encounter magic spells and luscious chocolate recipes, they will feel they're in the midst of a genuine coven. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE 2019]
