Narrator Ralph Lister does much more than assign distinctive voices to his characters. He creates complete personas. He includes attitudes and mannerisms and builds personalities for both men and women so there is no doubt who is holding forth or taking others to task. In the first installment of a new series, Sins of the Father, Yazid is trying in vain to get everyone to focus on a doomsday prophecy from the Dead God that is about to come due. He takes a journey over the sea to a land of sorcerers in the hope that they will show some interest in working together to prevent disaster. A great deal of world-building is necessary in the first of any series; Lister is engaged and keeps it lively. J.E.M.
