Peter Berkrot narrates an adventurous story of three brothers who learn of special gifts passed on to them by their father. Berkrot convincingly employs distinct tones for each brother, conveying their personalities. One brother has a conservative savior's complex, another brother is young and worrisome, and the third displays a flirtatious nonchalance. The exaggeration in Berkrot's voice reflects the unimaginable world of monsters, wizards, and warriors the brothers enter. Berkrot is humorous in his characterizations of the various beings in the novel. He playfully utilizes different accents and intonations that also support the New Orleans setting, steadily pacing himself in this first venture of The Blackwood Saga.
