Nancy Wu narrates the story of Nga-Yee, a government employee in Hong Kong desperately striving to support her teenage sister--first in life, and then in death. When Nga-Yee arrives home one day to find her little sister dead on the sidewalk below their 22-story window, Wu portrays Nga-Yee's despair and then her conviction that foul play was involved. Wu provides Nga-Yee with increasing determination as she overcomes her natural timidity to pursue answers. Nga-Yee's search leads her to the dangerous side of Hong Kong, the ugliness of teenage rivalry, and the shadiness of the dark cyberworld. This novel's simple language and superficial conversations--perhaps due to translation--are made more interesting by Wu's elegant narration.
