Listeners will be swept away to the mysterious island of Herrath through narrator Justine Eyre's engrossing performance. Her varied voices and creative use of accents bring to life this rich fantasy world in which citizens live under an oppressive caste system. Lower-class Nirrim knows her place, and Eyre captures her steadfastness and naïveté, but Nirrim soon begins to remember a history everyone else has forgotten. She partners with Sid, an overconfident traveler, to infiltrate the higher class in search of answers. With a slightly lower pitch Eyre dials into Sid's roguish nature, which fascinates Nirrim and turns the young women's partnership into an all-consuming romance. Eyre deftly maneuvers the twisty ending, which shifts in tone as sudden feelings of divided loyalty in Nirrim could keep the couple apart forever.
