A world filled with witches, warlocks, and necromancers is often dark and fearful. But this delightful tale of magic and enchantment balances the dark forces with the enlightenment of Cat, an unwilling hero. Gerard Doyle perfectly conjures up the characters of Chrestomanci, the overseer of all magic; Gwendolyn, the spoiled sorceress; and Cat, the would-be enchanter. His charming voice morphs into each being and adds to the charisma of the story. It's easy to see the influence this 1977 work may have had on Rowling's works.
