When artist Miranda Trent inherits her Uncle Gene's homestead in the Appalachians in Eastern Kentucky, she sets up what she calls a cultural adventure tour. In portraying this region, narrator Courtney Patterson effectively utilizes local accents, making them distinct but easily understandable. At Miranda's Paint & Shine event, clients get a chance to paint Lover's Leap and then go to Miranda's house for a local dinner and regional moonshine. But at the first event, the cook is stabbed with one of her own knives. Patterson keeps the action moving and is especially effective when older folks recount local history. He enlists his audience in the cause against the prejudice of locals who discriminate against those they perceive to be unlike them. V.M.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2020]
