PLAN OF ATTACK

Air Force Major General Patrick McLanahan has been demoted to a desk job, but it's still a vantage point from which he can see the sudden activity at Russian bomber bases. As listeners might expect, he's the only one who can anticipate a sneak attack on American soil and--when his superiors ignore his warning--the only one who can effectively end the threat. J.K. Simmons's pulse-pounding reading puts an emphasis on action, making tense exchanges in American and Russian war rooms sound as gripping as battles. Most of his character voices are standard-issue action-novel gruff, but his subtly menacing Russian president stands out in this nightmare view of diplomacy.
