The American Bible Society went back to the original documents for the Contemporary English Version of the Bible. The modern language takes a little getting used to. There are a few awkward translations, such as "We're stoning you because you did a terrible thing," but most of it works well. Ed Sala reads in a style that blends a conversational tone with a pastor's sermon to put Jesus's message across. The headers, a convenience in print, only interrupt the flow of Sala's narration here. The translation at times lacks the poetry of more traditional versions but should be effective as a teaching tool geared to Sunday school and Bible study classes. J.A.S.
