Newton's youthful timbre initially feels mismatched to the memoir's point of view--that of an older woman who is recounting valuable lessons in resilience. In addition to the challenges in Fiji, her determination was forged by adjusting to a new life in Vancouver at the age of 16 and successfully raising two children in an arranged marriage to an abusive husband.
