THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH

One of the oldest of ancient epics, Gilgamesh (c. 2,000 B.C.), is also, perhaps, the most accessible to moderns. What survives today recounts the adventures and spiritual journey of the semi-divine king of the title. One can enjoy it as a great yarn, a profound fable or a fascinating artifact. Using a lean, serviceable translation, Richard Pasco embodies all these qualities and adds considerable beauty in his recitation. With the first phrase, his virile, sinewy voice plunges in with inspired and unflagging energy. He uses consummate skill in varying pace and mood to fit the scenes to give himself respite and keep the flame burning bright. His accent may be British, but his sound reverberates through the eons from sweaty climes. He grabs the listener and doesn't let go until he's finished his tale. Y.R.
