PINKY PYE

The Pye family of Cranbury, Connecticut, vacation on Fire Island while their ornithologist father undertakes a study of the local birds. For Jerry, Rachel, and young Uncle Bennie, the summer brings all manner of surprises, starting with a spunky abandoned kitten, the heroine Pinky, and ending with a well-traveled owl. Kate Forbes narrates earnestly through the exploration of the summer cottage and island, weather and insect calamity, and a visit of most unexpected guests. Forbes's rendition of Pinky is fabulously kitten-like. Her even presentation emphasizes and foreshadows just as Estes would expect.
