Narrator Kineta Kunutu's South African accent is paired with a slow, melodic cadence for the sweeping narration of this convoluted novel. The story is set on the eve of the nation's vote for the first post-Apartheid presidency. Three generations of mothers--grandmother Rachel; her artist daughter, Yolanda, recently returned from America; and mixed-race granddaughter Ingrid--struggle with their lives and relationship against the background of 1994 South Africa. Kunutu uses a mélange of accents for the multitude of characters who tell their interconnected stories. British and Afrikaans accents, along with a fluid timeline, the presence of magic, and waking dreams, require close attention from the listener.
