AN INVENTORY OF LOSSES

by | Read by Christina Delaine

Contemporary Culture • 8.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2020

This collection of essays, stories, and memoir revolves around various kinds of loss, ranging from personal loss to the missing texts of Sappho to a fantasia on a selenographer (geographer of the moon) who disappeared from history. Most of the entries are fairly lyrical, some are verbose, and some of them go on too long. They are not helped by an overly dramatic reading. Christina Delaine could have pulled back a bit. The language itself is emotional, and an intense performance makes much of it seem overwrought. However, many different types and styles of loss are explored, and despite some flaws, this can be a rewarding listen. D.M.H. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2021]
