Peter Berkrot is a great narrator for this Tokyo-based audiobook. His ability to pitch his voice deeper and make it more gravelly works well with the drinking and carousing that form a good bit of the story's backdrop. An added bonus: Berkrot is good with women's voices, too. In this story, Detective Hiroshi Shimizu is on the trail of a serial killer. A man has been gruesomely killed on the train tracks. A video shows a woman--the killer?--near him before the "accident." The case builds from there, adding victims and touching on Japanese real estate dealings, business traditions, tactical information gathering, and the hostess industry. This is a strong first in a new series. Berkrot's performance is a definite asset. G.S. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2021]
