This is the second novel in a series about the life of Oakland resident Maceo Redfield. The hero returns home to help solve a murder and reconnect with his extended family. JD Jackson's narration grabs the listener from beginning to end in this taut thriller. Whether he is an elderly barber, a Creole grandmother, or a young blood trying to make his way in a hostile world, Jackson's vocalizations transport the listener to the reality of contemporary African-American life in a lower-middle-class northern California community. Few actors have this kind of linguistic repertoire, so the Tramble/Jackson collaboration makes for a highly entertaining audiobook. P.R. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/ MAR 06]
