Each one includes a preface describing an event in nature that sets the stage for an adventure involving two teenagers, Nicky and his brother, Kenny. As Nicky narrates their exploits, he shares stories and memories that offer a deeper understanding of the boys' close relationship. Together, they've struggled with Kenny's special needs, bullying, poverty, their mother's departure, their father's depression, and, ultimately, their ability to turn things around. Coates depicts authentic, multidimensional personalities with an engaging Yorkshire accent, creating thoroughly relatable characters. His flawless pacing and presentation of the story's visual imagery, misery, and humor take McGowan's compelling prose to another level. This is a gritty and hopeful listen. S.A.A.
