Author/narrator Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones's history of the world's first superpower is unique in that it is based, as much as possible, on Persian sources. Llewellyn-Jones's clear diction and careful pacing allow listeners to absorb details while gaining an appreciation for the power and immensity of Persia's influence, even into modern times. His informal delivery is welcoming, though he doesn't always distinguish between his own text and direct quotations. Llewellyn-Jones impressively handles the many foreign words, seamlessly switching between languages, both ancient and modern. More than a chronology of the emperors, this history addresses women's roles, religion, punitive systems, and architecture, among other topics. The audiobook comes with a helpful pdf that includes a map and illustrations, guides to the historical figures, and resources for further learning.
