FORTUNE How Race Broke My Family and the Worldand How to Repair It All

Christian justice activist Lisa Sharon Harper's melodic voice brings out all the pathos, anger, horror, and love in her unconventional family history. In this work, the author imagines what her Indigenous and Black ancestors experienced when European colonization enslaved millions, erasing their names and accounts of their origins and lives. Stating that "context is text," Harper delivers these imagined stories in halting, aggrieved, and hopeful tones, varying her cadence to fit the circumstances. Harper does not leave us without hope, however, offering redemption through truth telling, forgiveness, and discussion of the process of reparations. She believes that if all Americans engage in this work, we can become "the Beloved Community." The question is this: Are we--as individuals, church members, and citizens--willing to do this work?
