MYTH AMERICA Historians Take On the Biggest Legends and Lies About Our Past

Twenty essays by esteemed scholars, including editors Kruse and Zelizer, are performed by Allan Aquino, Maleah Woodley, Todd Menesses, and Sasha LaPointe. The strong texts strive to correct a variety of American myths relating to exceptionalism, immigration, Confederate monuments, and voter fraud. There are, however, some puzzling production choices: Essays open with brief musical offerings having no relationship to the subject, and there is little attempt to pair female and male scholars with same-gender narrators. While Woodley adopts an unfortunate broadcast-news style, LaPointe manages the complex fluency of nonfiction quite well. Menesses's more mature-sounding tones are a better match for the weighty material than Aquino's youthful voice.
