THE FLAMINGO RISING

In this pastoral coming-of-age story, set in a drive-in theater in '60's era Jacksonville, Florida, the adolescent narrator falls in love with the daughter of his father's bitterest enemy. Anthony Heald reads the somewhat precious first novel perfectly, sharpening the characterization, bringing out all the gentle humor, nostalgia and Southern gracefulness, while somehow remaining interesting even where the author sags.
