Narrator Michael Crouch portrays the epitome of the Marine fighter pilot, Bull Meecham, with a bar of blue twisted steel in his delivery. Ben, Bull's son, a gifted athlete and bookworm, is nothing like his father but still finds common ground and a way to love and respect him. Crouch imbues each character with the perfect tone and pitch, letting listeners feel pity, horror, and joy as Ben and his siblings mature. Cringe-worthy and heartbreaking scenes depict an authoritarian parent who brings the same discipline to his children that he employs with his soldiers.
