Anything written becomes a favorite listen when read by Carole Boyd. These short stories are connected in some ways by the author: the repetition of a name from one tale to another; the return to Finland and the Tyrol, northern regions where days are short and nights long. In “Girls on Ice,” two students walk on a frozen lake as a blizzard overcomes them, and we lose sight of them. Boyd’s sociability with each character puts each into a frame. She goes immediately to each essence and creates the background and the focal point of the picture. The writing is graphic, the stories memorable, and Boyd’s narration perfect.
