Jonathan Booth gives a splendidly somber narration of this work from the early sixth century. St Benedict's rules concern how monks were to live their daily lives as members of a monastery. They also address doctrine and observance of the Divine Office. Booth's British accent is a good match for this text. His intonation and pacing, along with his somber tone, noted above, are perfect for transmitting the instructions of a superior to a subordinate. The work itself is divided into several dozen chapters, a structure that makes the somewhat dry content easy to follow. While most would not consider a set of laws something to be listened to attentively, Booth makes this production work. M.T.F. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2023]
