Catherine Ho's straightforward style adds to the haunting quality of this unique coming-of-age novel. Teen Ren Yu is a competitive swimmer whose life revolves around training. But she's keeping a secret from her family, friends, and coach: She believes she's a mermaid. Ho's voice is melodic yet edgy; all of Ren's determination, anger, and pain come through in her brash syllables. Ho's performance is a stark contrast to that of Imani Parks, who narrates the letters Ren's best friend sends her in a warm girlish voice. These differences in style illuminate just how much is going on below the surface for both girls.
