There is an extraordinary moment in this novel when Anna Fields transports the listener into the consciousness of a character succumbing to the effects of a deadly poison. This moment and others elevate the sequel to THE NOB HILL MURDERS. Late nineteenth-century San Francisco attorney Sarah Woolson juggles three complicated cases, one handsome suitor, and four deaths with aplomb. Most enjoyable are Fields's portrayals of an irascible Chinese cook and a Scottish colleague. Fields continues to amaze as she switches personas, accents, and tone with alacrity. Listeners looking for likable characters, a plausible mystery, and a satisfying denouement narrated by one of the industry's best need search no further.
